Commercialization of the Pyrethrum Sub-sector in Kenya
Location: Kenya (Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nakuru, West-Pokot, and Nyandarua Counties)
Partner(s): Dan Church Aid (DCA)
Project Overview
This initiative focuses on the strategic revival and commercialization of the Kenyan pyrethrum sub-sector, a vital cash crop for natural pesticide production that has seen a significant decline from its peak production in the 1990s. By conducting a comprehensive market system mapping and analysis, Quercus Group aims to identify the framework conditions and impediments limiting growth. The ultimate goal is to design an operational model that fosters socioeconomic empowerment for smallholder farmers, enhances job creation, and increases exports of high-quality pyrethrum products from Kenya.
Key Areas of Work
- Market Systems Development (MSD): Analyzing the core supply and demand dynamics of the pyrethrum value chain.
- Regulatory & Policy Analysis: Reviewing national and international frameworks, quality standards, and laws governing the sector.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Facilitating collaboration between producers, cooperatives, private processors, and state actors.
- Socio-Economic Modeling: Designing intervention models focused on poverty eradication and rural economic growth.
Activities Implemented
- Market System Mapping: Identifying and documenting the roles of existing players, from input suppliers and extension officers to exporters.
- Diagnostic Assessment: Investigating root causes of system-level constraints, including low productivity and scarcity of planting materials.
- Stakeholder Consultations: Conducting Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) with diverse industry actors.
- Co-creation Workshops: Organizing ideation workshops with DCA staff and the Pyrethrum Growers’ Association to validate operational models.
Impact / Outcomes
- Operational Intervention Model: Delivery of a prioritized model for enhancing job creation and export capacity.
- Evidence-Based Reporting: A comprehensive market assessment report detailing volume, value, and potential for local and international markets.
- Strategic Growth Path: Clear identification of barriers and drivers to help Kenya regain its position as a leading global producer.
Approach or Methodology Used
Quercus Group utilized a Market System Centric Approach, blending qualitative and quantitative research. The methodology focused on the “Core” (supply/demand), “Supporting Functions” (infrastructure/skills), and “Rules” (regulations/norms). Specific analytical tools included Problem Tree Analysis, Sustainability Frameworks, and Causation Analysis to ensure the proposed solutions were both feasible and impactful.
