Ajira Poa! Job Creation and Skills Development for Youth

Location: Kenya (Nairobi and Nakuru Counties)

Partner(s): DanChurchAid (DCA), Kenya Alliance of Resident Associations (KARA), and the County Governments of Nairobi and Nakuru.

Project Overview

“Ajira Poa!” (Swahili for “Cool Jobs”) is a flagship initiative designed to tackle the high rates of youth unemployment in Kenya’s urban and peri-urban areas. The project focuses on creating a replicable and self-sustainable model for skills development and job placement. By aligning vocational training with the actual needs of the private sector and fostering an ecosystem for youth-led entrepreneurship, the initiative empowers vulnerable young women and men to transition from unemployment to gainful self-employment or formal jobs, driving inclusive economic growth.

Key Areas of Work

  • Market-Linked Skills Development: Identifying and bridging the gap between existing youth skills and the requirements of modern employers.
  • Entrepreneurship & Incubation: Supporting the launch and scaling of youth-led micro-enterprises through business coaching and mentorship.
  • Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships: Aligning government policy, NGO interventions, and private sector hiring needs.
  • Value Chain Integration: Connecting youth to growth sectors such as the green economy, ICT, and sustainable services.

Activities Implemented

  • Youth Motivation & Outlook Training: Conducting “Life Skills” and “Mindset Change” workshops to prepare 4,000 youth for the professional world.
  • Business Incubation: Establishing incubation hubs where 1,500 youth participants receive intensive training on business modeling, financial literacy, and marketing.
  • Apprenticeship Placement: Facilitating 2,500 job and internship opportunities through strategic partnerships with the Kenya Alliance of Resident Associations and local businesses.
  • Digital Platform Integration: Utilizing digital tools to track progress and connect job seekers with potential employers in real-time.

Impact / Outcomes

  • Empowered Workforce: Over 4,000 youth gained improved prospects and vocational skills, becoming self-sufficient members of society.
  • Job Creation: Facilitated the direct creation of thousands of jobs and internships, significantly reducing local unemployment in the pilot counties.
  • Sustainable Business Growth: Successful launch and stabilization of youth-led businesses, contributing to the local tax base and community resilience.
  • Replicable Model: Development of a proven “Job and Skills Development” framework that can be scaled to other regions in East Africa.

Approach or Methodology Used

The project utilizes a Demand-Driven Market Approach. Rather than providing generic training, the methodology begins by mapping the labor needs of local industries and then tailoring the curriculum to meet those specific gaps. By combining Human-Centered Design with Public-Private-Community Partnerships (PPCP), the project ensures that youth are not just “trained,” but are effectively integrated into a sustainable economic ecosystem that values their contribution.
