Pyrethrum Farming in Kenya

The project aimed at:

1. Presenting a comprehensive pyrethrum market system mapping and analysis that expounds on the framework conditions and impediments limiting growth of the pyrethrum sector in Kenya.
2. Generating an operational model that enhances Job creation for various stakeholders and increased export of pyrethrum products from Kenya.

To achieve this, The Quercus group used a methodology that was qualitative in nature and that embraced ,but not limited to, the following approaches: participatory assessment approach, focus group discussions and Key informant interviews. The stakeholders involved were not limited to: Producers, Producer Co-operatives and associations, Processors, Pyrethrin based businesses, Agri-finance entities, State Actors in the pyrethrum sector; Export Council etc.

Market system mapping

In achieving the first objective on market system mapping and analysis, the market ´system centric approach as indicated in figure 1 was  utilised. This will enablQuercus group to understand the market system structure, its operation and dynamics for the pyrethrum sub sector in the four counties (Nakuru, Nyandarua, West Pokot and Elgeyo Marakwet) in Kenya.
